Spartans to Calexico
by Michael S.  Hermes Staff writer

This week in sports ... Central Spartans take on the Calexico Bulldogs at the Bulldog House. Central is coming off a win against Palo Verde while Calexico is coming off a big loss against Brawley from last week. If Central wants to dominate this game they have to be able to stop the triple option offense they have used so far. Calexico needs to ground Central's air game if they want to have a chance at stopping the offense. They also must contain running backs Jonathan Medina and Angel Nava-Esparza.
The game will be held at Calexico high school's football field at 7:00. Come support the spartans!!!

Clear Your Absences!

by Jay G.

All students with unexcused and even excused absences,  can clear them at CUHS' Saturday School.  If you have unexcused absences you are limiting yourself from participating in school events. You may not be able to play sports or attend school dances and other events.

You cannot have more than 9 unexcused absences in order to attend senior activities.  If you are a senior who wants to participate in Senior activities but you have a lot of absences -- there is still time for you to clear them.  These activities are what most seniors look forward to, one of the highlights of high school -  so get to it and clear your absences!

Saturday School is at:
Central Union High School from
8:00 am to 12:00 pm
Every Saturday except during Holiday breaks.

A New Beginning

by Analysa G., Hermes Staff writer

It feels like just yesterday I was walking into school on my first day of Junior High, I was nervous. I remember being pushed and shoved by much taller and older kids than me; looking up and having to be aware of my surroundings so I wouldn’t crash into anyone. Seventh grade wasn’t the best school year, but eighth was the most happiest and joyful school year of my life. I made so many friends from so many different schools and I couldn’t wait to start high school with them.
Although it was fun and all, keeping my grades up wasn’t; I fell behind in so many of my classes. I didn’t understand the math, and I was always so nervous to talk to the teacher and ask for help. My history grade was bad because I wouldn’t pay attention since I was talking to friends. Overall I just fell very low in that year and it unfortunately caused me not being able to promote because I was slacking all year. I then got sent to summer school that school year.
I winded up passing summer school and later received my letter for CUHS. A couple of weeks went by and I went to pick up my schedule; I got home and texted my friends right away to ask what their classes were. I was so disappointed to find out that I had no classes with any of my close friends. I decided to take this as a sign and thought to myself that maybe this is for the best, this is an opportunity for me to be able to focus on my work better.
So this is a new start - a new beginning.
So far my grades are a lot better than the grades I had in Junior High, I’ve been able to ask for help when I need it. I make sure to really pay attention in all of my classes. My math grade isn’t the best but I’m working and improving on it. Last week my math teacher even told me she’s been noticing that I’m showing more effort in my assignments.

I have a strong feeling this year’s going to be a good one, much better than Junior High, I can tell you that.

You've been Waffled!

Picture
On Thursday October 12 at 7:15am there was an event called “The Waffle Walk” that started from Bucklin Park to Central High School. The Waffle Walk was organized by the Imperial County Health Department. The purpose of the walk was to teach students a safer route getting to school. Central Union High School and its students were invited to participate.
That morning many of the students who participated left home without breakfast because they thought they’d be receiving a free waffle after their walk.
Unfortunately, the waffles were not free, well, they were for those who qualify for free lunch at school but not for the others.
Most if the walkers of had to pay approximately $2.50 for their waffle breakfast (2 waffles, packaged syrup, fruit, milk, and the option of apple or orange juice).
Many were baffled by this due to the fact that on the Central Union High School’s page stated,” Students will walk to CUHS and then have a free Waffle Breakfast at the MPR.” The school’s Instagram account called cuhs_updates also stated this on their post from October 11, 2017 that,”Waffles will be given out for breakfast at the MPR.” As a way to get to the bottom of this scandal we went straight to the top, and spoke to principal of Central Union High School, Mr. Lyon. This is what he had to say,”Well I think that it was more of a miscommunication because they entitled it as a waffle walk but it was partly our fault we needed to do a better job of working with the [county] that put on the waffle walk making sure [of what] they say and include.” Next year Mr. Lyon will do his best to ensure that  students won’t be left without waffles and that there are no false advertisements in the future.
We contacted the person responsible for organizing this event at the County of Imperial via email and phone call and at press time have not heard back from her.

Last week’s game between the Central Spartans and the Imperial Tigers was a game you definitely did not want to miss. This game was Central’s redemption from their loss against Southwest to show The Valley they are still contending for the IVL title. The game started off slow but soon became a massive battle between both teams defense.
The Central Spartans were down at the end of the game but made a comeback to tie the game and go into overtime. Both teams were unable score in the first overtime missing their field goals. Then came second overtime winning the game with a field goal by Sebastian Coronel. Senior Linebacker Andres Garcia said “It was a tough game, we went all out and put everything we had into that game, we finally got to redeem ourselves from last week’s loss and show the valley that Central Football is not to be taken lightly!”

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month
by Bryan I.

Domestic violence is a very serious problem, with very serious consequences.  It  harms many people world wide. This problem affects everyone in a way and it needs to be stopped. In fact 1.3% of women and 0.9% of men reported experiencing  domestic violence in the past year. Domestic violence can be stopped by helping people who are being abused and lend them an ear. Another way to help stop domestic violence is to speak up and help people. Also only 1% of domestic violence cases are reported to the police in the the United States. One case of domestic violence that I found interesting was the story of Lissette Ochoa. On July 29, 2006, Lissette Ochoa and Rafael dangond attended a wedding party and Dangond became aggressive after Ochoa was invited to dance with a group of friends. A young male then danced with her for a while and once she returned to her seat, Dangond took her outside and he started battering her and hitting her. Dangond later went to jail for assault and was sentenced to 5 years in prison and luckily Ochoa survived. In conclusion Domestic violence harms our society and it affects people exposed to it. If you or anyone you know is affected by domestic violence, there is a way to stop it by contacting Woman Haven Center in El Centro CA.(760 353 6922).
